On March 23, 2020 Governor Brian Kemp announced an extension of the income tax filing and payment deadline from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. This will bring Georgia’s deadline in alignment with the Federal deadlines announced on March 20, 2020.
The Georgia Department of Revenue has also issued guidance giving each individual county Tax Commissioner the authority to waive penalties and interest on the following returns/applications due April 1, 2020 – please note that the filing deadline for these items remains April 1, 2020:
• Business Personal Property Tax Returns
• Homestead Exemption Applications
• Freeport Exemptions
• Conservation Use Value Assessment (CUVA) applications
• Forest Land Protection Act (FLPA) applications
The guidance can be found here: https://dor.georgia.gov/guidance-county-tax-commissioners-april-1-2020-property-tax-deadlines-light-covid-19.
We encourage everyone who files a Freeport Exemption to file timely. Several of the counties have stated they will not provide extensions for Freeport Exemptions.
We will continue to update our clients through email blasts, website posts, and social media as additional information becomes available.
